Privacy Policy — Moniego Android App

Overview

Moniego is an offline-first expense tracker. By default, all data remains on your device. Syncing across devices is optional and requires explicit configuration.

Data Collection & Storage

Local Data (On-Device)

When you use Moniego, the following data is stored locally on your Android device:

• Expenses: amount, currency, merchant name, notes, categories, and timestamps
• Categories: names, hierarchy, and colors
• Exchange rates: cached from the Frankfurter API for offline currency conversion
• User preferences: display currency, app settings, and payment notification preferences

This data is never collected, accessed, or transmitted by us unless you explicitly enable sync with a backend server.

Synced Data (Optional, Backend Only)

If you connect Moniego to a backend server for multi-device sync:

• Your username and password are used only for authentication
• Expenses and categories are synced with the server
• Synced data is stored on the server you choose (which may be self-hosted or provided by a third party)
• We do not control or access synced data on servers you manage

Payment Notification Capture (Android Only)

This feature is optional and off by default.

When enabled:

• You select which banking apps to monitor (e.g., Revolut, N26)
• Moniego reads notifications only from the apps you selected
• All processing happens on your device — raw notification text never leaves your phone
• Captured payment data is only used to pre-fill the expense form; no data is sent to any backend unless you save the expense and enable sync

Third-Party Services

• Frankfurter API: The app directly fetches currency exchange rates from Frankfurter for offline use. This request contains only your IP address and the date of the rates you're requesting.

Permissions (Android)

• Notification Access: Only requested if you enable payment notification capture. Used solely to detect notifications from apps you select.
• Local Storage: Required to persist your expenses on your device.

Data Deletion

• Local data: Delete the app or clear its data from Android Settings to remove all local information.
• Synced data: If using a backend server, you control deletion via that server (contact your server administrator).

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. Continued use of the app constitutes acceptance of updates.
